Dr. Conrady Murray Trial
Explosive Interview with Police
LAPD Detective Scott Smith Testifies
Updated 10/07/11 at 10:52 AM
Jurors finally got to hear from the doc himself... in what's considered one of the most important pieces of evidence in the trial.
Detective Scott Smith introduced a two-hour audio recording he conducted with Murray two days after Michael Jackson died.
* In the audio, Murray sounded calm and collected as detectives ask him basic information.
* The meeting -- attended by Murray, his lawyer, and a second detective -- was held on June 27th at a hotel in Marina del Rey.
* Murray said on he arrived at MJ's house at 12:50 am on June 25th. He went straight to MJ's room and waited for him.
* MJ arrived at 1:05 am after his rehearsal saying he was tired and fatigued.
* Murray then rubbed a cream on his body to treat his Vitiligo.
* Murray said he gave MJ an IV in either his right or left leg, then gave him a 10 mg Valium pill.
* MJ couldn't sleep so Murray gave him 2 mg Lorazepam IV.
* Murray said Michael complained he still couldn't fall asleep so he gave him 2 mg of Midazolam around 2 am ... about an hour after he gave him the Lorazepam.
* After that didn't work Murray turned down the music and suggested meditation. He said MJ finally closed his eyes "reluctantly" and finally dozed off at around 3:15.
* MJ woke up again at 4:00 am
* At 4:30 MJ said, "I have to sleep Dr Conrad, I have to sleep."
* Murray gave him another 2 mg of Lorazepam.
* He was still wide awake by 7:30 am. Murray gave him another 2 mg of Midazolam ... which again had no effect.
* Michael was complaining the whole time that he would have to cancel his tour.
* He begged Murray for "Milk." Murray finally agreed to give him 25 mg of Propofol around 10:50 am slowly infused over 3 to 4 minutes.
* Murray said MJ finally fell asleep around 11.
* He said the most he'd ever given MJ was 50 mg of ... but he had to be cautious because he had given him other medications throughout the night.
* Murray told detectives he gave MJ Propofol every night for 30 days, except for 3 nights when he was trying to "wean him off".
* Murray said he was surprised at how knowledgeable MJ was about the different pills and medications.
* He said he first heard MJ was using Propofol when the singer called him asking him to help him get the drug. He gave him the number of another doctor who had it.
* MJ spoke to the other doctor -- who told him MJ "loves that drug."
* Murray said he was monitoring MJ long enough to feel comfortable.
* That's when Murray says, he had to go to the bathroom.
* He says he was gone for 2 minutes.
* When he came back he wasn't breathing. His Pulse was high.
* Murray started doing CPR and mouth to mouth.
* Murray did chest compressions with one hand
* he couldn't take him off the bed so he improvised placing his left hand under the body.
* Murray said he continued compressions with one hand while calling MJ's assistant on his cell. He didn't ask him to call 911 because he said he was busy giving CPR.
* Murray lifted MJ's legs to get more blood to his heart.
* Murray went downstairs and asked Chef to get security. Security called 911.
* Murray continued doing CPR until paramedics came and hooked him up to pulse oximeter and got him intubated.
* Murray said he didn't call 911 because he didn't know the zip code for MJ's house.
* Murray said as he was caring for MJ paramedics were talking to UCLA and wanted to give up. He begged them to transfer care to him because MJ was his friend.
* He said he was in the ambulance with MJ as they transported him to UCLA
* Murray said they tried for about an hour.
* He said they the doctor at UCLA wanted to try a balloon pump to help start MJ's heart.
* After the called the code the doctor asked Murray what happened. Murray told her maybe it was massive pulmonary embolism.
* Murray said he didn't want to sign death certificate because he didn't understand the cause of death.
* Murray insists he was trying to wean MJ off Propofol 3 days before his death.
* Murray said he started to give MJ more Lorazepam and Diazepam to bring down the Propofol.
* Two night before he died Murray says no "Milk was given" and MJ slept well. Murray thought he was "on to something."
* But the next night it didn't work.

08.10.2011 um 00:22Jurors hear police interview of Michael Jackson's doctor
By Alan Duke, CNN
October 7, 2011 -- Updated 2111 GMT (0511 HKT)
Los Angeles (CNN) -- Jurors in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson's doctor began hearing from Dr. Conrad Murray Friday through an audio recording of his police interview two days after Jackson's death.
The first few minutes of the recording were played in court before the judge recessed the trial for lunch, with the rest of the audio to be heard Friday afternoon.
Los Angeles Police Det. Scott Smith is heard telling Dr. Murray he would make the interview "as painless and as quick as possible."
Murray told police he gave Jackson a series of drugs, including the surgical anesthetic propofol, over a 10-hour period in an effort to help him sleep, according to testimony at the preliminary hearing in January.
Det. Smith, one of two investigators who questioned Murray, was called as a witness Friday morning to play the recording of the two-hour interview.
Earlier Friday, Dr. Murray's lawyers questioned the coroner's toxicologist in their effort to convince jurors that the sedative lorazepam, not the surgical anesthetic propofol, was the drug most responsible for Michael Jackson's death.
Toxicologist Dan Anderson testified Friday morning that while all blood and urine samples collected in Jackson's autopsy were tested for propofol, the coroner's office did not test all of them for lorazepam levels.
"I think it has its importance but it was not the red flag that caught my eye," Anderson said Friday. "Propofol in any case that we handle is important, probably more important than any other drugs that we deal with."
The Los Angeles County coroner concluded Jackson's June 25, 2009, death was caused by "acute propofol intoxication" in combination with sedatives, including lorazepam.
Lawyers for Murray contend Jackson swallowed eight lorazepam pills and self-administered a dosage of propofol while Murray was not watching. The result, they contend, was near instant death for the pop icon.
Prosecutors contend the high level of propofol found in Jackson's blood was the result of Murray's reckless use of a makeshift IV system with no monitoring equipment to put Jackson to sleep with the drug.
Jurors heard about the drugs found in the Jackson's blood Thursday and Friday. The scientific evidence, presented by a coroner's toxicologist, is tedious and often hard to follow, but is the cornerstone of the prosecution's case.
Jurors who will decide if Murray is criminally responsible for Jackson's fatal overdose appeared to pay close attention as they took notes while Anderson detailed the lab results from Jackson's autopsy Thursday. Anderson returned to the witness stand Friday morning for more defense cross-examination.
A higher level of lorazepam was measured in Jackson's stomach contents than in the blood from his heart and leg, defense lawyer Michael Flanagan noted as he questioned Anderson.
"The concentration is about four times as concentrated in the stomach as it is in the blood, you think that's an important number?" Flanagan asked.
"Not really," Anderson said. "It doesn't necessarily mean it's oral administration."
Along with propofol, Lidocaine and lorazepam, tests of blood taken from Jackson's heart and leg also tested positive for Midazolam and Diazepam, drugs commonly used to alleviate anxiety or induce sleep.
Jackson did not have Demerol in his blood, which is significant because of the defense contention that Dr. Arnold Klein addicted Jackson to the painkiller in frequent visits to his Beverly Hills dermatology clinic in the weeks before his death, without Murray knowing.
Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff said in his opening statement that Jackson was unable to sleep because he was going through withdrawal from Demerol since he had not visited Klein for several days.
Murray's fingerprint was found on the 100-milliliter propofol bottle that coroner's investigator Elissa Fleak testified Thursday she found inside a saline bag that was sliced open. The prosecutor contends it was that bottle that contained the drug that killed Jackson.
Fleak, who testified Wednesday and Thursday, endured an aggressive cross-examination during which Chernoff suggested she made "a substantial number of mistakes" when she searched Michael Jackson's bedroom.
Fleak acknowledged that she waited nearly two years writing in a report that the propofol bottle was inside the bag. She did, however, mention it in her preliminary hearing testimony.
She also never photographed the bottle in the bag, although she took dozens of photos of many lesser pieces of evidence.
At that January hearing, Fleak testified that she found a broken syringe plunger on the nightstand next to Jackson's bed, with a needle on the floor below. This could support the defense theory that he might have injected himself with the fatal dose of propofol.
But Fleak testified this week that she was mistaken about the needle matching up to the syringe. She told Chernoff she only realized this after a meeting this year with the prosecutor.
She also conceded that she moved the syringe before photographs of it were taken. Her fingerprint were later found on the syringe, an embarrassment for an investigator who said her practice is to wear rubber gloves when handling evidence.
Another oversight Chernoff pointed out was Fleak's failure to collect the IV stand and saline bag next to Jackson's bed until two days after his death.
Fleak revealed that she destroyed her handwritten notes from her June 25, 2009, search, but not the notes from the June 29, 2009, search. She said it is her routine practice to destroy her notes after she writes a report.
"You made substantial mistakes in your investigation?" Chernoff asked.
"No," Fleak replied.
On Wednesday, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren covered a courtroom table with drug vials and medical paraphernalia taken in Fleak's searches, a visual display of Murray's in-home treatment of Jackson.
Prosecutors argue that Murray, who was Jackson's personal doctor as he prepared for planned comeback concerts, is criminally responsible for the singer's death because of medical negligence and his reckless use of the propofol to help Jackson sleep.
If convicted of involuntary manslaughter, Murray could spend four years in a California prison and lose his medical license.
