Burger rejected defence claims that the loud noises she heard coming from Pistorius’s house were the sound of him using a cricket bat to smash down the door of the bathroom. She said she heard four loud gunshots, and that the intervals between each were too short for the noises to have been a bat swung against a wooden door.

Earlier in the day, Pistorius broke down in tears as his prosecution told the first witness in the case, Michelle Burger, that she could not have heard a woman scream after shots were fired because Miss Steenkamp was shot in the head, a catastrophic injury that caused "serious brain damage" and rendered her unable to make a sound.

Mr Roux indicated that his legal team had conducted tests and determined that it was impossible to hear screams from 177m away when someone was locked inside a lavatory with the window closed.

Mrs van der Merwe said that after the four sounds, there was "total silence".

"After I heard the four shots, I heard my husband waking up," she said. "I asked my husband what that was - he said that they were firearm sounds, gunshots."

Mrs der Merwe said her husband got up and looked out of the window but couldn't see anything.

They then heard "a commotion", she said, adding that her husband called the estate's security company.

"I then heard someone crying out loudly," she said. "I asked my husband who was crying like that and he said it was Oscar. To me, it sounded like a woman's voice."
