Expert: Promoter created conflict with Jackson doc

Associated PressBy ANTHONY McCARTNEY | Associated Press – 11 mins ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The promoter of Michael Jackson's ill-fated series of comeback shows created a conflict of interest with the singer's physician when it negotiated terms of his deal, an expert testifying for the superstar's mother told a jury on Monday.

David Berman told jurors hearing a negligent hiring lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live LLC that the company should not have negotiated with Jackson's physician without notifying the singer's representatives of the discussion.

The former head of Capitol Records and high-level positions at several other record companies is being paid to testify for Katherine Jackson in her lawsuit against the concert company.

Asked whether it was appropriate for AEG Live to attempt to hire a doctor on Jackson's behalf, Berman responded, "I believe that it's highly inappropriate. It is highly unusual."

A more appropriate relationship would have been for Jackson to hire cardiologist Conrad Murray without any involvement from AEG Live, Berman said. Based on draft contracts and emails between company executives, Berman said he believed AEG Live thought it controlled the physician.

Berman retired from the music industry in 2001 to become an expert witness for music industry-related lawsuits. He said he had never heard of a situation in which a tour promoter hired a doctor on behalf of an artist. He began working in the music business in 1969 as a transactional attorney before making the leap to record executive, working with acts such as The Eagles, Van Halen, The Beach Boys, The Doors and numerous other big-name acts.

Berman said he believed that music companies owe a higher obligation to artists than to music buyers or concert goers and, in this instance, AEG failed Jackson.

He was shown emails in which a tour accountant traded emails with Murray without including any of the singer's representatives.

To prepare for his testimony, Berman said he had reviewed numerous documents, including 26 depositions and testimony from AEG executives during the trial, which is now in its eighth week. He said he is being $500 an hour for his work on the case.

Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011, was never paid his $150,000 per month fee for working with Jackson. The superstar died from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol before signing Murray's contract.

AEG denies it hired Murray. The company's executives and lawyers have said the company was merely advancing Jackson the money to pay Murray, and a valid contract never existed. Its executives also have stated that it agreed to pay Murray's salary only because Jackson insisted on him coming on tour.

The company's lawyers have yet to question Berman but already have objected to his expertise. An AEG Live defense attorney has noted that Berman was never a tour producer or promoter — functions that AEG Live was serving as during preparations for Jackson's comeback shows.

Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos reminded jurors on Monday that they will ultimately decide whether AEG Live hired Murray.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The promoter of Michael Jackson's ill-fated series of comeback shows created a conflict of interest with the singer's physician when it negotiated terms of his deal, an expert testifying for the superstar's mother told a jury Monday.

David Berman told jurors hearing a negligent hiring lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live LLC that the company should not have negotiated with Jackson's physician without notifying the singer's representatives of the discussion.

The former head of Capitol Records and holder high-level positions at several other record companies is being paid to testify for Katherine Jackson in her lawsuit against AEG Live.

Asked whether it was appropriate for the concert company to attempt to hire a doctor on Jackson's behalf, Berman responded: "I believe that it's highly inappropriate.

He began working in the music business in 1969 as a transactional attorney before making the leap to record executive, working with acts such as The Eagles, Van Halen, The Beach Boys, The Doors and other big-name acts.

Berman said he believed that music companies owe a higher obligation to artists than to music buyers or concertgoers and, in this instance, AEG failed Jackson.

AEG denies it hired Murray. The company's executives and lawyers have said the company was merely advancing Jackson the money to pay Murray, and a valid contract never existed. Its executives also have stated that it agreed to pay Murray's salary only because Jackson insisted on him coming on tour.

An AEG attorney showed Berman an statement signed by Jackson's former manager, Frank Dileo, stating that he was aware of negotiations with Murray, and that it was his understanding that AEG Live's CEO objected to bringing the physician on tour.

The company's lawyers have yet to question Berman but already have objected to his expertise. An AEG Live defense attorney has noted that Berman was never a tour producer or promoter — functions that AEG Live was serving as during preparations for Jackson's comeback shows.

Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos reminded jurors Monday that they will ultimately decide whether AEG Live hired Murray.

It will be several more weeks before the trial concludes. Plaintiff's attorney Brian Panish said Monday that he expects to finish his case the week of July 8.

Promoter deal with Michael Jackson's doctor 'highly inappropriate,' expert says

By Alan Duke, CNN
updated 8:54 PM EDT, Mon June 17, 2013

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

* Music industry veteran David Berman testifies for Jackson side in wrongful death trial
* AEG Live's contract with Dr. Murray caused 'an inherent conflict of interest'
* Jackson's longtime chef Kai Chase set to testify Tuesday
* Fire marshal limits number of observers in court, allowing just 1 member of the public

Los Angeles (CNN) -- AEG Live's negotiations with a doctor to treat Michael Jackson were "highly inappropriate," a music industry veteran testified Monday.

The concert promoter's agreement to pay Dr. Conrad Murray $150,000 a month during Jackson's comeback tour set up an "egregious" conflict of interest in which the physician was beholden to the company and himself before Jackson's interests, he testified.

David Berman, who once headed Capitol Records and worked for decades as an entertainment lawyer, was brought into court as an expert witness by Jackson's mother and children in their wrongful death lawsuit against AEG Live.

The tiny Los Angeles courtroom became less crowded Monday after the city fire marshal, acting on a complaint from an unidentified party, ordered that fewer people be allowed inside, according to a court spokesman.

Just one seat is allotted to the public and the number of journalists allowed inside was reduced to just eight at a time under the new limits. The 30 seats set aside for lawyers were not reduced.

The judge rejected CNN's request to televise the trial in March, but she has allowed a small camera and microphone to be focused on the witness so that people in another courtroom can watch the trial.

Michael Jackson's longtime personal chef Kai Chase, who was in his home when he died, is set to testify Tuesday.

Also coming up, the Jackson lawyers will show jurors the "This Is It" documentary produced using rehearsal video.

The wrongful death trial, which is in its eighth week, is expected to last until August, according to lawyers. Jackson lawyer Brian Panish estimated Monday that he would call his last witness around July 8.

One of the four alternative jurors asked the judge to dismiss him from the case Monday because he has sold his Los Angeles home and must move to Atlanta. "If we are only a third of the way through there's no way I can make it," he said.

Judge Yvette Palazuelos said it is"highly likely I'm going to excuse you," but she will confer with lawyers from both sides before deciding.

The Jackson lawsuit accuses AEG Live of liability in Michael Jackson's death because it negligently hired, retained or supervised Dr. Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death.

Murray told police he used the surgical anesthetic propofol to treat Jackson's insomnia so he could rest for rehearsals for his "This Is It" concerts. The coroner ruled Jackson's death was from an overdose of the drug.

AEG Live lawyers argue it was Jackson who chose and supervised Murray. They contend AEG executives had no way of knowing the doctor was using propofol on Jackson.

Berman, who is paid $500 an hour by the Jacksons as an expert witness, said he reviewed "an enormous amount" of material, including an "extraordinary number of e-mails," to reach his conclusions that Murray's hiring was "highly inappropriate and "highly unusual."

"I have never heard of it being done, and indeed, it is my understanding up until these case, AEG had never done it," Berman testified, referring to a concert promoter hiring a doctor for an artist.

"It creates an inherent conflict of interest on the part of the physician," Berman said. "The physician has dual obligations to the patient and the entity that is engaging them and who is paying his compensation. That, in of itself, is a conflict. It's a more egregious conflict in the circumstances in this case."

Berman was critical of AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips' response to an e-mail from show director Kenny Ortega warning five days before Jackson's death about the singer's "continued physical weakening ad deepening emotional state."

"Kenny, it is critical that neither you, me, or anyone around this show become amateur psychologists or physicians," Phillips wrote "I had a lengthy conversation with Dr. Murray, who I am gaining immense respect for as I get to deal with him more. He said that Michael is not only physically equipped to perform and that discouraging him to, will hasten his decline instead of stopping it. Dr. Murray also reiterated that he is mentally able to and was speaking to me from the house where he had spent the morning with MJ. This doctor is extremely successful (we check everyone out) and does not need this gig so he totally unbiased and ethical."

Phillips' response is "very telling on a number of levels," Berman said. "He is somewhat dismissive of Mr. Ortega's concerns."

"There are serious problems with that statement because he recognizes the potential of the doctor not being ethical and unbiased if he does need the gig and has financial problems," he said.

It shows AEG Live was aware of the potential for a conflict, Berman testified. "When, in fact, Dr. Murray was in dire financial straits at the time and did need the gig."

A Los Angeles Police detective testified earlier in the trial that Murray was more than $1 million in debt and that his Las Vegas medical clinic faced eviction in the months before he was hired to treat Jackson.

The contractual relationship between AEG Live and Dr. Murray was "not unlike the team doctor for a football team, where the quarterback is injured and the doctor comes to the medical conclusion that the quarterback should be taken out of the game for a period of weeks, but the team doesn't want him out," Berman said. "There is an inherent conflict."

Berman also noted that the contract said AEG Live could terminate Murray if concerts were postponed or canceled.

"The fact that if the tour is even just postponed that AEG Live has the ability to cease any further compensation for Dr. Murray, giving Dr. Murray even greater conflict of interest since he was in financial dire straits, he did need this gig and if it was postponed, which could hypothetically be in the best interest of Michael Jackson, he ran the risk of losing any further compensation," he testified.

Berman was asked about the so-called "smoking gun" e-mail sent by AEG Live Co-CEO Paul Gongaware ahead of a planned meeting with Dr. Murray: "We want to remind him that it is AEG, not MJ, who is paying his salary. We want him to understand what is expected of him."

The e-mail indicates AEG Live executives wanted "to control, to some extent, Dr. Murray" by reminding him they are paying his salary, Berman said.

Is that reasonable, he was asked. "Certainly not," Berman said. "It is indicative of the fact that they want to control the services of Dr. Murray, as opposed to the artist."

Berman testified that AEG Live executives should have recognized there could be a problem with Dr. Murray when he initially asked for $5 million for one year as Jackson's doctor. "That is a pretty bizarre amount," he said.

The eventual agreement to pay the doctor $150,000 a month was still "an exorbitant amount, more than any other person on the tour was paid," he said. "Even more of a red flag since AEG was aware of another doctor who was willing to take the job for $40,000 a month."

"It's indicative of something out of whack," Berman testified.

Berman also said it was "inappropriate" for AEG Live to not loop in any Jackson lawyer or manager into the negotiations with Murray. "I find that extremely unusual," he testified.

Murray signed the contract and faxed it back to AEG Live on June 24, 2009 -- a day before Jackson's death. But AEG Live's executives never signed and the signature space for Jackson's signature was also left blank.

"That is not inconsistent with this being a valid oral agreement," Berman said.

Berman testified the e-mails confirmed an oral agreement was in place. It is a common practice in the music industry for oral agreements to be put in writing long after the services are commenced, he said.

He pointed to the certification of sponsorship AEG submitted to the British government for Murray to practice in England as evidence they considered him hired.

Jackson Family Feud Reignites! Janet, Randy & Jackie Skip Nephew’s Wedding, While Jermaine Turns Up Late!

Posted on Jun 17, 2013 @ 13:11PM | By Dylan Howard

Janet Jackson and two of Michael Jackson‘s brothers skipped their nephew’s wedding at the weekend, the latest sordid chapter in the famed music family’s long running feud.

“Everyone in the family was invited to Taj’s weddings,” a source close to the family told RadarOnline.com, “but Janet, Randy and Jackie chose not to attend.”

Taj, the son of Tito and the brother of MJ’s kids’ co-guadrian TJ, married at Hayvenhurst, the Jackson family’s English Tudor-style home in Encino, Calif., where King of Pop Michael grew up.

A source told Radar: “Tensions still exist between the brothers, sisters and their mother Katherine. Many have turned on each other.

“It all comes down to money and their motivation to do what they did last year — taking Katherine away to Arizona behind the backs of Michael’s kids.”

Janet, Randy and Jackie, along with brother Jermaine and sister Rebbie, ignited the drama almost 12 months ago when they sent a scathing letter to the executors of their late brother’s estate, John Branca and John McClain, claiming the pair faked the King of Pop¹s will in order to gain control of his fortune — an allegation the executors deny.

“At the time we couldn’t possibly fathom what is so obvious to us now: that the Will, without question, it’s Fake, Flawed and Fraudulent,” their letter read.

In the days that followed, Jermaine, Janet and Rebbie took family matriarch Katherine Jackson, to Arizona amid reports she had been kidnapped or missing.

Police were also called to a family disturbance call at Katherine’s Calabasas, Calif., home after Jermaine, Janet and Randy reportedly tried to take Michael Jackson’s children, Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket from the compound.

In the wake of the incident, the Jackson estate banned the siblings from Katherine and the children’s home.

Jermaine and Tito later released statements in which they admitted regret at signing the document — and the bans were overthrown.

“The source of much of the issue, still, is that Katherine is upset that her children didn’t tell her than Prince, Paris and Blanket were trying to contact her when she was in Arizona,” added our insider.

“Randy was the ringleader of it all and the wounds between him, his mother and his siblings are still pretty deep, today.”

Randy particularly has issues with Tito and specifically TJ, added the source, while Janet continues to fight the validity of the will much to disappointment to some members of the family.

Two of those who joined the fight against the executors, Tito and Jermaine, did attend the wedding, though Jermaine was so late he missed the ceremony! He arrived with his father Joe, son Jaffar and wife Halima Rashid.

As we first reported, 15-year-old Paris Jackson did not attend the wedding of her cousin as it was too soon after she slashed her wrists land was rushed to hospital in apparent bid to take her own life. Prince Michael and Blanket did, however.

Kris Jenner and legendary MLB player Barry Bonds also attended the ceremony.

Michael Jackson Prosecutor: Wade Robson’s Molestation Claim ‘Did Not Come As A Surprise’

Posted on Jun 17, 2013 @ 5:01AM | By Dylan Howard

The prosecutor who grilled Wade Robson during Michael Jackson’s 2005 child molestation trial — and whom was met with Robson’s steadfast denials that he wasn’t sexually abused — has told RadarOnline.com that he’s not surprised the dancer-choreographer ultimately recanted his testimony.

Breaking his silence on Robson’s decision to file a claim against Jackson’s estate, claiming alleged child sex abuse by the late pop icon, Santa Barbara County prosecutor Ron Zonen said: “It did not come as a surprise that Wade eventually acknowledged being a victim of years of sexual abuse.”

Robson, now 30, notoriously denied under oath at Jackson’s trial that he had been molested by the singer.

“Try as we may to get victims to disclose what happened to them, they just don’t do it on our schedule, they do it when they are ready,” Zonen, who was the Santa Barbara senior assistant district attorney at the time, told Radar exclusively.

“That often happens well into adulthood and often after a baby arrives. I wish Wade well, his disclosure is the first step to a complete recovery.”

Interestingly, Zonen specifically prodded Robson in the trial eight years ago about the physical contact he had with Jackson, who befriended by the Thriller singer when he was age five.

Zonen: Mr. Jackson would periodically kiss you.
Robson: No

Zonen: Periodically hug you?
Robson: Yes

Zonen: Touch you?
Robson: Hug me.

Zonen: Did he ever kiss your lips
Robson: No

Zonen: On occasions you stayed in bed with Mr. Jackson would you ever cuddle in bed?
Robson: No

Zonen: Would you lie next to one another?
Robson: No

Zonen: Would you touch?
Robson: No

Robson admitted to Zonen that his mother had given permission for him to sleep in Jackson’s bedroom at Neverland Ranch, at his mother’s apartment in Hollywood, in a Las Vegas hotel and at the pop star’s condo in Century City, Calif., while his mother, Joy, stayed across the street at another hotel.

“Had you ever crawled into bed with a 30-year-old man prior to that?” Zonen probed.

“My father,” Robson said, defensively.

“Okay.”

“But other than that, no,” the witness said.

“Any person you had just met?”

“No.”

Jackson was ultimately cleared of conspiracy to commit extortion, false imprisonment and child abduction, child molestation and giving a child, Gavin Arvizo, then 13, an intoxicating drink. His acquittal was partly based on the testimony of Robson, his sister and his mother.

In an interview last month on TODAY, Robson said Jackson performed sexual acts on him — and forced him to reciprocate — from the ages of 7 to 14.

Robson told Matt Lauer that Jackson gained his silence by telling him they would both be imprisoned if he let out the secret, often calling him in discussions he called “complete manipulation and brainwashing.”

“I never forgot one moment of what Michael did to me,” Robson said, “but I was psychologically unable and unwilling to understand that it was sexual abuse.”

It was Zonen who told the court in 2005 that “something terribly illegal” happened at Neverland.

“They rode rides, went to the zoo, ate whatever they wanted – candy, ice cream, soda pop. There was only fun,” Zonen said, in a statement to the jury, according to court records.

“At night, they entered into the world of the forbidden. They learned about sexuality from someone only too willing to be their teacher.”

Jackson’s estate has called Robson’s new accusations “outrageous and pathetic.”

Chef describes kids' grief over Jackson's death

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY
— Jun. 18 8:08 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson's personal chef described for jurors the home lives of the children during the final months of the singer's life and their ongoing grief over their father's death nearly four years ago.

Gone are the freewheeling days when the children, Prince, Paris and Blanket Jackson played with their father and traded jokes at the dinner table, chef Kai Chase told jurors Tuesday.

It has been replaced, Chase said, by a weight on eldest son Prince Michael Jackson's shoulders. Daughter Paris Jackson cries and no longer wants parties for her birthday since her father hosted a private circus for her 11th birthday. Youngest son Blanket, who remains home-schooled, wears a T-shirt with his father's image every Friday, she said.

Chase recounted for jurors her interactions with Jackson, his children and her ongoing work with the singer's mother and children for jurors hearing Katherine Jackson's negligent hiring case against concert promoter AEG Live LLC. The company denies all wrongdoing.

After weeks of testimony about Jackson's business dealings with AEG, Chase's testimony returned the trial's focus to the King of Pop and his offspring.

"At 16, the weight of the world is on his shoulders," Chase said of Prince Jackson, who is trying to figure out girls and all the challenges adulthood brings.

His younger brother, 11-year-old Blanket, has his older siblings to shield him from pain but had the least time to spend with his father. "He never really had a time when it was father-son because he was so tiny," Chase said.

The singer's only daughter seems to be having the hardest time, Chase said.

"Being daddy's little girl, Paris is devastated," Chase said. "She's devastated and lost."

Chase's testimony provided a look into the lives of Jackson's three children before and after their father's death in June 2009. Michael Jackson was fiercely protected of their privacy, often using masks to hide their faces when they were in public.

She now has daily interactions with Jackson's children since being hired to serve as their chef in July 2012. Of Paris, she said, "She's trying to find herself and find who she is," Chase said. "It's taking a lot of love and understanding to keep her together. She breaks down, she cries, she talks about him."

Earlier in her testimony, she described an April 2009 birthday party for Paris that included a private circus. The Cirque du Soleil-style show featured men on stilts and a woman performing in a giant balloon, Chase said.

Paris Jackson, who was turning 11, adored her father and Chase helped decorate a room filled with posters and photos of the "Thriller" singer. The singer's music was played throughout the party.

It was the last birthday party the 15-year-old has had. "Paris hasn't had any birthdays since," Chase said. "She hasn't wanted to celebrate since."

She described the routines in Jackson's home in the months before his death, describing him as a vibrant and hands-on father. But by June 2009, Chase said Jackson was deteriorating and she witnessed Prince having to help his father up a staircase to his bedroom.

She said she met AEG executives at the center of the case, including chief executive Randy Phillips and executive Paul Gongaware, when they came to Jackson's home for meetings about the singer's ill-fated "This Is It" comeback concerts. One tense meeting in June started with a vase being broken — she didn't know by whom — and with Jackson and his personal physician storming out.

The doctor, Conrad Murray, told her as he left the home, "I can't take this (stuff.)"

She described the Jackson family dynamic in happier times at the home. The entertainer wouldn't allow his children to eat sweets and made sure they went to bed early so they would be alert for tutors who instructed them. Chase described Jackson as a prankster who ate meals with his children, exchanging jokes and stories.

When the singer entered the room, his children would run to their father when he came into a room. "They would take off like lightning," she said, hugging their father's ankles and legs.

If jurors determine AEG Live is liable for Jackson's death, they will have to determine any damages awarded to his mother and his children.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The emotional state of Paris Jackson was reported in court Tuesday during the Michael Jackson wrongful death trial.

A member of the Jackson staff says Paris still cries and talks about her late father. Michael Jackson's former personal chef, Kai Chase, said that as the singer prepped for his comeback tour, he was upbeat, excited and energized in April 2009. Two months later, a nightmare was unfolding at his home.

On Tuesday, Chase broke down describing the day of Jackson's death. She said Jackson's children were crying and praying. Chase testified she now works for Katherine Jackson and the singer's three children.

The family is suing Jackson's tour producer, AEG Live, alleging that executives hired Conrad Murray, whose use of the hospital sedative propofol led to Jackson's death.

Chase described Jackson's home life and said he was an involved and loving father adored by the children. She said she was fired in 2009 from Jackson's home because of management changes, but then rehired within weeks. By that time, she says Jackson was very weak. She testified he told her that he needed her to keep him healthy and told her, "They are killing me."

The testimony comes in the eighth week of the trial, marked by many testy arguments between counsels.

It came to a head in the chambers of Judge Yvette Palazuelos. She questioned the battling attorneys about alleged acts of rudeness on Monday. "Inappropriate gesturing" is what the judge called it, according to a transcript obtained by Eyewitness News.

The judge addressed Jackson attorney Brian Panish, "It's been brought to my attention that you have been gesturing something to Mr. Putnam."

AEG attorney, Marvin Putnam, said to Panish, "You've given me the finger twice."

Panish denied it, and redirected attention to an AEG lawyer, calling her uncivil, disruptive and attacking.

Putnam told the judge that the finger gesture happened twice and that there had been a practice of uncivil behavior for two months. Palazuelos ended the sidebar saying, "No gesturing please."

* Tom Mesereau represented Michael Jackson in his 2005 child molestation trial
* Despite reports she may go with her mother, Paris Jackson currently remains in the custody of Michael's mom and his adult nephew
* Jackson's family is suing AEG Live for the wrongful death of Michael Jackson during preparations for his 'This Is It' comeback show

He had a front-row seat for one of the lowest points of Michael Jackson's life. Now Tom Mesereau, the attorney who represented Jackson in his 2005 child molestation trial, is sharing with Showbiz Tonight his surprising views about the current Jackson family drama.

Mesereau tells Showbiz Tonight he thinks Michael Jackson would be okay with his 15-year-old daughter Paris living with her mother, Debbie Rowe. That would be a sharp difference from Jackson's family, who've reportedly vowed to fight any effort by Rowe to take custody of Paris after the teen's recent suicide attempt (as of yet, Rowe's made no such effort).

Why does Mesereau think Michael would be okay with that mother-daughter reunion? And while Mesereau may differ with Jackson's family on the Paris issue, he tells Showbiz Tonight he's backing them in their wrongful death lawsuit against concert promoter AEG Live. Find out why in the clip.

Paris Jackson testifies in AEG case by video

By RICHARD JOHNSON

Paris Jackson -- who is still the hospital recovering from her recent suicide attempt -- testified via videotape today in the trial over her father's death four years ago.

The 15-year-old, who is suing AEG live along with her granmorher and her siblings, was questioned under oath last October about her former nanny, Grace Rwaramba.

Lawyers for the Jackson family had hinted Rwaramba had been fired by AEG the same way Jackson's personal chef Kai Chase has been let go two months before Jackson died.

So AEG lawyer Jessica Stebbins Bina played a clip from Paris deposition. Asked why Jackson fired Rwaramba, Paris replied, "My dad didn't like her... She was sneaky. She wasn't an honest person, and lied a lot."

Michael hired her back more than once because he felt sorry for her. "She didn't really have money," Paris explained.

"One time when me and my brother were really young, before Blanket was born.. She would call the hotel and say she was his wife and they'd let her in, and he'd wake up and she'd be like in his bed.... She was obsessed with him.

That's what he told us...kinda freaky."

Asked why her father didn't get rid of her, Paris replied, "He did. He sent her to India. She kept coming back."

Paris Jackson testifies via video from hospital in her father's wrongful death trial against concert giant AEG Live

By Daily Mail Reporter

She is currently recovering in hospital after a failed suicide attempt earlier this month.

But Paris Jackson was still called upon to testify in her family's wrongful death suit against AEG Live regarding her father Michael's death.

The 15-year-old, who is suing the concert giant along with her grandmother Katherine, 83, and siblings, was questioned by video from the UCLA Medical Center on Tuesday, according to the New York Post.

Katherine's lawsuit claims AEG failed to properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who is serving a four-year prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter over the 50-year-old star’s death, and pushed the superstar to rehearse and perform a planned series of 50 comeback shows titled This Is It.

Lawyers acting for Paris, Prince Michael, their brother Blanket, 10, and Katherine contend that pressure from AEG led to Jackson’s death from an overdose of surgical anaesthetic in June 2009, two weeks before his This Is It concerts were to begin at the O2 Arena in London.

Both Paris and her brother Prince are listed as potential witnesses in the case, which is in its sixth week of trial.

The Jacksons' lawyers were allegedly gearing up to ensure Paris wasn't forced to testify after her recent suicide bid, so today's proceedings came as somewhat of a surprise.

Marvin S. Putnam, a defense attorney for AEG Live, said Paris and Prince Jackson were deposed in the case because they are named plaintiffs. He said Paris' testimony was not a 'grilling' but urged privacy for her and her family.

'There's a real person involved here,' Putnam said. 'There's a 15-year-old girl and something incredibly tragic has happened that none of us know why and I think it would really be in everyone's best interest and particularly in her best interest if rather than blowing this up into something else, that they were given a little bit of privacy to deal with something that has to be a tragic, tragic moment for all of them.'

'She's 15,' he said. 'Someone should give her a break.'

According to TMZ, legal papers reveal the famous offspring are asking for $10 billion for all of the future earnings they claim their father would have generated if he had he lived.

According to the website the family want an additional $50 million for various other damages.

AEG, which denies any liability for the star’s death, says the huge figure is based on speculation and that Jackson’s career was on a downward spiral

Legal analysts say the billions being claimed are unlikely to be awarded and are a legal tactic to get publicity for the case.

Just days prior to her suicide bid, Paris was reportedly told that she does not share the same biological father as Prince.

Then, over the days that followed, Paris spiralled into depression and was admitted to the UCLA medical centre hospital after cutting her wrists and taking an overdose of pills on June 5.

Whilst the teen is said to be feeling better, she could remain in hospital for another month.
