Jack Beecham contacted the families of the men over the weekend about the discovery of the material and at first it was believed the cloth may have come from the lining of a leather coat worn by one of the five lost men, William Sterling of Yuba City. But a family spokesman said this morning they now doubt the origin of the cloth.*

He walked a short distance toward the sound so he could see around a bend in the road Schons said he saw a car in the road,
"and there seemed to be people moving around it ' He said, however. "I called and they moved away.”
"I was very angry" the men had refused to help. Schons said He said he returned to his car and about 4 a m —
when the car ran out of gasoline and he got cold - he started walking along the road toward the car he had seen.
When he reached it no one was around. He shouted, and “nothing stirred," Schons said. He said he opened a door of the unlocked car

Einer der Vermissten kannte sich in der Gegend wohl aus da er vor ein paar Jahren eine Hütte am Bucks Lake nutzte—die Freunde von ihm gehörten, dort wurde auch intensiv gesucht.
One of the missing men stayed at a cabin at the lake owned by friends of his family several years agoGenerell gestaltete sich die Suche schwierig da zu dieser Zeit sehr starker Niederschlag und Stürme vorherrschten.
Die Suchaktion war bis dato die Größte in jener Gegend, mehrere Countys waren beteiligt.

Schons said from his hospital bed today that he heard two whistles — he thinks about midnight — as he sat in his snowbound car after suffering a heart attack
He walked a short distance toward the sound so he could see around a bend in the road Schons said he saw a car in the road,

When he reached it no one was around. He shouted, and “nothing stirred," Schons said. He said he opened a door of the unlocked car
and saw nothing unusual inside. He can’t remember whether the keys were in the ignition. (There were no keys in the car when it was recovered by sheriff’s deputies Tuesday.)
Schons managed to walk the remaining five miles or so to Mountain House, where he was given a ride to the Oroville hospital
He told the people at the Mountain House Lodge about the second car but they apparently did not report it to the sheriffs office
That was not done until Tuesday, when Forest Ranger Willard Burris came upon it.

Heavy snows this morning forced Butte County authorities to call off their search for five missing Yuba-Sutter area men around the Bucks Lake area,
spokesmen said. Meanwhile, Yuba County authorities have stepped up their search efforts for the men after two foothill area residents said the men
may have been seen at the Brownsville store on Saturday and Sunday. Sheriff James Grant said today that Yuba County deputies are searching the
foothill area and surrounding communities, for other clues that may lead to the locating of the five men. A spokesman for the Butte County Sheriff’s
Office said today that searchers returned this morning when heavy snow began falling just before another day’s search was to begin. Several inches
of new snow had fallen overnight adding to two feet of new snow dumped in the Bucks Lake area

Perhaps the most intensive search in recent Yuba County history was launched by Sheriff James Grant today for five Yuba-Sutter men missing since Feb. 24
Recent information points toward the Yuba Countv foothills, and every back road and structure in the foothill area north of Marysville -
Dobbins Road will be searched on a systematic basis. Grant said The men were reportedly seen in Brownsville the weekend of Feb. 25-26. and a psychic who conferred
with members of their families perceived them in a cabin or shack in a wooded, hilly area near a body of water The sheriff’s office has been given a tape recording of
a session between psychic Dr. Gloria Hlizabeth Daniel and the families held Friday [...] said The sheriff would not say whether Dr. Daniel perceived the men as alive or dead.
Foul play has been considered one of the possibilities since their disappearance, but thus far there is no evidence pointing at foul play.
The live mentally - impaired men were last seen when they attended a basketball game in Chico Feb 24 Their car was seen about midnight that night on a dirt mountain road east of
Oros die but the connection between the car and the missing men was not made until the following Tuesday. An intensive, week-long search of the Mountain House -Bucks Lake area
failed to turn up any sign of the men. and the search now is being concentrated in the foothill area from Collins Lake north to LaPorte The search and other efforts to find the
men are being coordinated with Butte Countv. and county lines will have no effect on the search.
Grant said Four counties are included in the search area — Yuba. Butte. Plumas and Sierra

Search For Lost Men Moves To Lake Oroville The search for five Yuba-Sutter men missing for nearly two weeks took a grim turn today,
as state rangers began searching the shores of Lake Oroville for bodies. Deputies in Butte County also plan to check roadsides along every route the men
could have taken from Chico to the Mountain House area where their car was found abandoned. The possibility the men have been kidnapped and murdered has been
considered by authorities since their disappearance. The theory has gained weight as the days have gone by and extensive searches have failed to turn up any sign of them.
The ground search of the area between Forbestown and LaPorte wound up today, although a helicopter was making one more pass over the area in an effort to find signs of the men.
The reward offered by family and friends of thehas been raised to $2,600. Rangers from the state Parks and Recreation Department will use
their patrol boats to check areas of the large lake where a car can get close to the lake — bridges, boat ramps and places where the road parallels the lake,
according to Butte County Undersheriff Richard Stenberg. Meanwhile, deputies and explorer scouts in vehicles and on foot will check roadside areas and culverts
on all routes from Chico the men could have taken, he said. The men were last seen Feb. 24 at a basketball game in Chico and were reported piissing the following day.
Their car was seen about midnight Feb. 24 on the dirt road between Mountain House and Bucks Lake but the connection
between the car and the men was not established until later that week. A week-long search of the Mountain House area uncovered no trace of them. A similar search of the
Forbestown - LaPorte area followed when a woman reported seeing the men at Brownsville but it. too failed to uncover a sign of them. All the men suffer some mental impairment,
have been associated with the Pathways Projects program here and were scheduled to play the day following their disappearance in a Special Olympics basketball tournament
They are: William Lee Sterling. 29, of Yuba City; Jack A. Madruga, 30. of Linda; Jack Huett. 24, of Linda; Ted Weiher, 30, of Olivehurst; and Gary Mathias, 25.

A Butte County rescue team planned to use a helicopter today to check two sets of footprints found yesterday about five miles from where a car containing five missing
area men was found stuck in snow three weeks ago The footprints and four pieces of gold-orange clothing tied along trees north of the abandoned car are the only possible
new clues searchers may have to the strange disappearance of the five slightly - retarded men. Lt. Kenneth Mikeison of the Butte County Sheriff’s Department said today the
tracks were discovered on Soap Stone Hill and appear to “wander’’ into the rugged and steep Soap Stone Canyon. The tracks, which Mikeison said appear to be old, start from a
secondary skid trail off the Oroville - Quincy Road. “We don’t know yet if the tracks have anything to do with the case,” Mikeison said today. He said the tracks initially
led to several old cabins, which were searched yesterday without results. His search was abandoned when the rescue party encountered deep snow. Rescuers found four separate
orange strips tied to trees along the old highway [...] about five miles north of where the car was found, he said Yuba County Undersheriff [...] Jack Beecham contacted the
families of the men over the weekend about the discovery of the material and at first it was believed the cloth may have come from the lining of a leather coat worn by one of
the five lost men, William Sterling of Yuba City. But a family spokesman said this morning they now doubt the origin of the cloth. The strips were found at regular intervals
from where the auto was found empty, stuck in snow, but in working condition. Mikeison said that if today’s helicopter search of the tracks proves fruitless the search will be
suspended unless new clues are developed. The men were last seen after they attended a basketball game in Chico on Feb. 24.
They are Sterling, Jack Huett, Jack Madruga, Gary Mathias and Ted Weiher
