Intense fighting reported inside Damascus city limits

(Reuters) - Opposition fighters battled Syrian government forces in poor districts of Damascus on Sunday in some of the most intensive daytime fighting yet inside the city limits of the capital.

Activist Samir al-Shami, who spoke to Reuters by Skype from Damascus, said the fighting was underway in the al-Tadamon district in the capital's south, after a night of sustained battles in the nearby Hajar al-Aswad district.

"There is the sound of heavy gunfire. And there is smoke rising from the area. There are already some wounded and residents are trying to flee the area," he said, showing live video images of smoke visible over the skyline.

"There are also armored vehicles heading towards the southern part of the neighborhood," he said.

He described it as the most intense fighting he had heard in the capital. Another Damascus resident who asked not to be identified also said the fighting was the worst so far.

"This area has had a lot of fighting ... The area is kind of a slum. The people who live there are poor. There's a lot of people and a lot of grassy areas around it so it's easy for rebels to sneak in and out."

An explosion hit a security forces bus in Damascus on Sunday and wounded several people, activists said. Residents said they heard a powerful blast, followed by the sirens of ambulances rushing toward Damascus's southern ring road near the neighborhood of Midan.

Fifteen months into an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, intensive fighting has reached the outskirts of the capital in recent weeks, focused on poorer areas where anger against the authorities is highest.

Armour-backed Syrian troops enter Damascus district

AMMAN, July 16 (Reuters) - Syrian troops backed by armoured vehicles entered the district of Midan in central Damascus on Monday to drive out rebels who have secured a foothold at a striking distance from major state installations, neighbourhood activists said.

In the biggest armoured deployment in Damascus in the 17-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, infantry fighting vehicles deployed along main thoroughfares of Midan, a Sunni Muslim neighbourhood, as the insurgents withdrew to alleyways and sporadic fighting was reported, they said.

"The rebels are trying to hold the army off in al-Zahra al-Jadeeda (neighbourhood). There is fighting there and the sound of bombardment and rocket-propelled grenades is echoing from there," Radeef, an opposition activist, said by phone from Midan. "Armoured vehicles are now deployed in the rest of Midan and army snipers have taken positions on rooftops."

Another activist said residents of the large neighbourhood were staying indoors and the only movement seen was that of the army and its armour and rebels in the alleyways of the old district, which has been rebuilt since it was shelled during a rebellion against French occupation in the 1920s.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other opposition sources said residents of Nahr Aisheh, a poor Sunni neighbourhood south of Midan, had blocked the main Damascus-Amman highway with rocks and burning tyres to try and relieve pressure on Midan.

Assad hat wichtige Verbündete verloren

Bislang hatte Assad Bevölkerung seines Landes mit seinem Netz von Allianzen in Schach gehalten. Dieses Netz aber ist in Auflösung begriffen. Mehrere seiner Verbündeten haben ihm die Gefolgschaft aufgekündigt:

Die Stämme im Süden des Landes haben sich bereits mit Beginn der Aufstände in Deraa im März 2011 losgesagt.
Die Stämme im Osten des Landes haben dem Regime seit Sommer 2011 ihren Rückhalt entzogen. Mit Nawaf al-Fares, dem Ex-Botschafter im Irak, hat nun auch ein prominentes Stammesmitglied offiziell die Seiten gewechselt.
Auch Teile der sunnitischen Wirtschaftselite in Damaskus haben dem Regime inzwischen den Rücken gekehrt. Seit Ende Mai 2012 zeigt sich ihre Opposition alle paar Tage, wenn während immer größerer Proteste und Streiks Geschäfte und Betriebe geschlossen bleiben.
Die jungen Sunniten, die als Wehrdienstpflichtige das Gros der syrischen Armee stellen, hat das Regime längst verloren. Seit Frühjahr 2012 haben die Berichte über Fahnenflüchtige drastisch angenommen. Schon damals ging das türkische Außenministerium von mehr als 60.000 Deserteuren aus - bei einer Gesamt-Armeestärke von 295.000 Mann.
Im Juli hat sich auch Manaf Tlass, ein General der Sondereinheit des Militärs, nach Paris abgesetzt. Er war einer der letzten Sunniten in den oberen Reihen des Sicherheitsapparats. Assad kann sich nur noch auf die alawitischen und christlichen Chefs im Geheimdienst und Militär verlassen. Von ihnen ist bisher kein hochrangiger Vertreter desertiert.

Zwar ist das Regime den Rebellen militärisch nach wie vor überlegen. Doch andererseits sind ganze Landstriche längst in Rebellenhand. Selbst Teile von Damaskus kontrolliert Assad nicht mehr.

Das Regime scheint sich inzwischen darauf zu konzentrieren, an seinen Stammesgebieten festzuhalten - dem Machtzentrum in Damaskus und an der Küstenregion, wo viele Alawiten aber auch Christen leben. Die brutalsten Kämpfe toben am östlichen Rand dieses Gebiets, um Hama und Homs.

"Die Armee ist derzeit nicht in der Lage zu gewinnen. Aber die Rebellen können sich genauso wenig durchsetzen", sagt Nicholas Nassif, Journalist und Syrien-Experte in der libanesischen Hauptstadt Beirut SPIEGEL ONLINE. "Es wird für lange Zeit Chaos herrschen."
