"Hezbollah issued an official denial of responsibility for the rocket fire. "Hezbollahdenies being involved in any operation to launch missiles today against occupiedPalestine," said a flash script on Hezbollah-run Al-Manar television.
The PopularFront for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command also denied Sunday any involvementin the rocket attacks.
An Israeli official accompanying Prime Minister Ehud Olmerton a visit to the United States confirmed Palestinians were apparently behind the rocketfire, adding that Israel would not retaliate.
"The prime minister was updatedabout the Katyusha rockets immediately after the event and has consulted with the defenseminister and foreign minister," the official said. "It seems that it was Palestinians,not Hezbollah."
The official said Israel viewed the attack with "deep concern" andbelieved the Palestinians were trying to trigger an Israeli military response. But, theofficial added: "Israel will not be drawn in."
According to a Lebanese securitysource, "There were four or five rockets fired into northern Israel." One of the rocketsstruck next to a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) base in the southernLebanese village of Houla.
Another Lebanese security source said three rocketswere fired from the area of the south Lebanese village of Taibe, and local witnesses aLebanese army patrol found the launch site near Taibe where a fourth Katyusha rocketapparently failed to launch.
The Lebanese army also set up roadblocks in an effortto locate a black Honda that was seen fleeing the scene of the rocket fire.
IsraelDefense Forces sources also said they believe the rockets were fired from the Aadaissearea which is located near Taibe - west of Kiryat Shmona and north of Kibbutz MisgavAm.
Yasmina Bouziane, a deputy spokeswoman for the UNIFIL peacekeeping forces,said: "We're ascertaining the facts on the ground."
According to police, aninitial examination determined that the rockets had a diameter of 107 mm. Police aresearching for an additional rocket that my have struck inside Israeliterritory.
Defense officials instructed the Kiryat Shmona municipality to continuewith life as usual, and not order residents into bomb shelters. The municipality'semergency hotline, however, will operate around the clock.
Magen David Adomemergency medical services Director-General Eli Bin placed emergency medical teams onhigh alert throughout northern Israel.
Kiryat Shmona Mayor Haim Barbivai calledfor a tough response from both Israel and the Lebanese government. "Heaven help us if wehave another summer like the last one. That would be a tragedy," he told Channel2.
Kiryat Shmona was hard-hit during the 34-day Second Lebanon War, during whichHezbollah fired some 4,000 Katyusha rockets at towns and cities across northernIsrael."
