Michael Bush Exhibition Q&A
Sunday, October 14th 2012
Michael Bush has brought a collection of Michael’s personal and concert outfits to the UK, which is currently on display at The Getty Gallery, The Street, in Westfield in London. The exhibition, which is named; The Collection of Tompkins & Bush: Michael Jackson Wardrobe,’ is now running and will be there until November 4th.Shane McCusker is involved with the exhibition and met with Michael Bush. Not only has Shane taken a lot of great photographs, but he agreed to do a Q&A on some of the items included.
How many costumes and outfits are featured at the exhibition?I’m not sure of the exact number, but I know that there is over 50 exhibits on display, plus we are introducing some new items to the exhibition and some of the things we currently have will be leaving, so if you’re a die-hard fan, make sure you come and check out what’s there, as once it’s sold in December you will never see this collection together again in public!
Can you tell us about some of the outfits?Well, they are all very different and all very special. There is a fascinating story behind each and every one of them; my personal favorite is the black jacket MJ wore during ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’’ on the ‘Bad’ tour. It’s the jacket he wears in the very opening of the show, it’s pretty iconic; he wore that when he was introduced to Princess Diana for the first time. I like it not only for that reason, but also; it hasn’t been washed since the last night of the tour. MJ’s makeup stains from 25 years ago are still there; you can actually see a clear hand print from where he hit his chest during the routine, to me, that’s amazing! It just shows how much care Bush has taken of these items since MJ gave them to him.
What other items are available for Michael’s fans to see?I’m not sure what will be there on show after the items change, as I’m writing this a few days before we change, but currently I would say the highlights include the original white suit from the ‘Smooth Criminal’/’Moonwalker’ film, the ‘Bad’ tour silver jacket with the black buckles and of course the glove, simply because it is just so iconic!
Is there an illustrated brochure/programme the fans can purchase about the exhibition?Absolutely! We have a beautiful golden glossy programme available at the gallery for just £5.00. It features images of the items on display, descriptions about them, plus loads of beautiful images from the vast Getty Images Archive.
Will there be a chance to purchase copies of Michael Bush’s book at the venue?Yes, there will be a book launch day later this month, where Michael (Bush) will be in to meet fans and sign copies of the book. It’s great value for money; I was lucky enough to have Michael Bush read it to me, quite literally page-by-page, which is 4 hours I will never forget; it’s only £30.00/$45.00, and the book is HUGE! Gloss paper, hardback; it’s a coffee-table book, a true collector’s item, plus the fact MJ is the one who suggested that this book be released makes it that little bit more impressive, as it’s kind of like the loose ends of one of his many incomplete projects finally being finished off and shown to the fans.
Will Michael Bush be present at any time during the exhibition?Michael has only had one day off since the exhibition opened! He loves meeting the fans, he’s in New York now for his Times Square Hard Rock Cafe book signing, but he’ll be back here in London at the end of the month for the UK book signing!
How much does the exhibition cost? The exhibition costs £10.00 each per person. Many people have asked both Michael, the people at Julien’s auctions etc and myself why the cost is in place; it is simply to cover the costs of the exhibition set-up. The costumes are now extremely fragile. Most of them haven’t been worn in over 20 years. Because of this, we have had to use special displays and lighting set-ups in order to display them well, without causing any damage to them. All of us at the exhibition take great care of the items, and unfortunately the equipment used to preserve these items does cost money.
How do you obtain tickets?Tickets are available at the reception desk or at Ticketmaster.
Do you know where else in the world the exhibition is going to be taken?
The exhibition has come from Chile, to Ireland, we also have one in Tokyo, and from London & Tokyo it will converge back in LA for the auction in December.
Is there anything else that you would like to tell Michael’s fans about the event?
Only that it is the only chance that they will get to see this collection up close. The exhibition has been done with so much care and attention to detail, if you are thinking about visiting, visit! You will regret it if you don’t go! I see Film & Television sets and costumes all the time and they are usually quite cheap and tacky looking up close; these items are even better to see up close! The methods behind making them and the attention to detail used to create these pieces is really a reflection of the friendship and creative partnership shared between Tompkins & Bush, plus of course the one and only King of Pop; Mr. Michael Jackson!
Before he passed, Michael (Jackson) went to Julien’s Auctions to set up an exhibition of his personal items, so this is what MJ requested months before we lost him.
