It is only with the most extreme caution and reluctance that someone making repulsive and racist statements should be labeled a Nazi. Hitler’s crimes were so monstrous that most comparisons to them cheapen and insult their horror.
Yet there are times when such comparisons are justified, and Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad's now-infamous speech is one of them.
Have you ever read "Mein Kampf"? Hitler’s tract begins with a diatribe against Communism, or International Socialism. Hitler wanted a National Socialism based on racial and national solidarity (the nickname “Nazi” comes from the first two syllables of the German pronunciation of “national” – knot-zee-oh-nahl), and thus hated Marx’s call for workers of the world to ignore racial and national distinctions and unite.
This goes on for a while and you at least understand his argument. Then suddenly out of the total blue comes this emotional venting against the Jews. “Where did this come from?” you ask, and go back through previous pages, finding nothing. There’s no warning, no argument, no marshalling of evidence. His hatred for Jews just explodes out of nowhere.
You can’t understand, from reading "Mein Kampf," why Hitler hated Jews. You can only understand it in the context of what Hitler was trying to accomplish psychologically in the minds of Germans.
Before World War I, Germany was a world power with a colonial empire rivaling that of England and France. After the war, she was stripped of every colony, was forced to pay massive reparations, endured astronomical hyper-inflation that destroyed her economy, and was made to suffer vindictive humiliation by the war’s victors.
Such impoverishment and humiliation had created within the German people a level of frustration so pathological that it could be sparked by a clever demagogue into full-blown criminal insanity. Hitler recognized that his path to power lay in finding a scapegoat upon whom the German people could take out their frustration, upon whom they could blame for all their travails, upon whom he could direct envy.
Hitler found the scapegoat he needed in the Jews. “It’s not your fault!” would be his message to the Germans. “Your defeat, your loss of empire, your poverty, your humiliation – it’s not your fault! It’s the fault of ... the Jews! It’s their fault. They control everything, they control the banks, they control the world! Your defeat and humiliation is a Jewish plot to destroy you! Kill them all!”
This is exactly the same message, for exactly the same reasons, delivered by Mr. Mahathir.
Throughout the Islamic world, Moslems relentlessly engage in psychological self-laceration, torturing themselves with a sense of shame and mortification in the face of Western Civilization’s accomplishments. It’s an opportunity no Moslem demagogue could refuse.
So Mahathir gets up in front of an audience of Islamic leaders from around the world and announces: “It’s not your fault! Your humiliation by the West, your tyrannies, your lack of freedom and democracy, your lack of scientific achievement, your vast poverty even with vast oil riches, it’s not your fault! It’s the fault of the Jews, who rule the world by proxy, who get others to fight and die for them!”
And just like the Germans who cheered Hitler, the audience of world Islamic leaders stood up and cheered Mahathir. There is a Nazi poison that is infecting the Moslem religion to the bone. The only antidote is acceptance by Moslems of full responsibility for their circumstances – that those circumstances are no one else’s fault but theirs alone.
It’s either that or take the implications of Mahathir’s hate speech to their logical conclusion: If everything that happens in the world is done, as Moslems devoutly believe, by the will of Allah, and Jews rule the world, then Allah must be on the side of the Jews. To fight the Jews is to fight the will of Allah, and thus Mr. Mahathir’s speech was an act of Islamic sacrilege.
The Koran is unclear, however, on whether the appropriate punishment for blaspheming Allah is death by stoning or hanging. Take your choice, Mr. Mahathir.
