To begin with, here is my own opinion about the definition of Art.
Art is what you make of it, when you see something, feel about it, interpret it and the way you chose the media which matches the best for oneself as well as the arrangement . A combination of skill, knowledge, practice and concept. Comparable to looking to a magic window which shows others the way an artist sees the world. Even tough art is the description of any skill or mastery.
The fact that there is no art in the world but artists, is something which reassures us, that it is something manmade and comes only from the human mind.
"In order correctly to define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider it as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life." Leo Tolstoi
Tolstoi described it in a critical way in the viewers position, which is really very relevant to what most people actually think and that connects the artist with the viewer in the means of communication.
But the actual word art can be interpreted in many different ways as for example the study, the process, the product and indeed the audience. It's origin comes from the skill, by means to show something you can.
The art area is put together of fine art, theatre, literature and music.
The history of art began about 40.000 years ago with cave paintings, sculptures, rock paintings and petroglyphs, but that doesn't mean it didn't exist before, because scientists have found a collection of drilled snail shells in South Africa, as it was made for decoration, which brings us back up to 75.000 years ago.
Although the most known art foundations lie in ancient civilizations like Persia Mesopotania, India, ancient Greece, Rome and Arabia. All these have had the most influence of the ongoing history of art and from there on it developed in what we call art now, like for example the Greeks with their superrealistic studies of bodies. By that time art was only considered as craft.
As the Western Middle ages approached everything became more religious rather than telling the truth and art became separated in "artes mechanicaes" and "artes liebrales" which included medicine and philosophy. Everything used to be flat by then and was mostly for commercial use.
Followed by the Renaissance which represented the valuation of the material world and made everything seem nice and golden and it was the beginning of 3 dimensional painting and drawing. Artists weren't seen anymore as craftsmen.'The idea that "truth" could be discovered through the application of reason was tremendously exciting.'
In the 18th century was called as the Age of Enlightenment showed for the first time emotions and individuality of single persons and artistic movements started at the late 19th century, like academic art, symbolism, fauvism and impressionism. The leading people were Thomas Jefferson, Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton. It was amazing that they finally discovered the aesthetics, what made people start to rely on the meaning of art. A huge discovery about the world moving around the sun was a catastrophe in the eyes of the church.
During the two world wars art changed mainly by unprecedented technological development and was not anymore seen like before. It was depicting the happenings and some new art movements appeared called Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism. Art became more political and started showing protest in the artists minds. Einstein and Freud influenced that a lot. In 20th century art there are artist who were very much influenced by western art , as for example Pablo Picasso and later Matisse partl as well from african sculptures. Japanese woodprints were influenced by impressionism.
'Similarly, the west has had huge impacts on Eastern art in 19th and 20th century, with originally western ideas like Communism and Post-Modernism exerting powerful influence on artistic styles.'[w.] From that on there came the Relativism which was the influence by contemporary art and the post-modern critisism.
Cultures began to mix up a lot and it became even harder to seperate where the influences came from.
"To produce a perfect pearl the oyster needs some piece of matter .... round which the pearl can form . If the artist's feelings for form and color are to crystallize, he too needs such a hard core -- a definite task on which he can bring his gifts to bear."[G.A.p 594]
This quote shows us, that not everyone has the strong motivation to really show what he bears inside and my opinion to that is, that artists are peolple who might have more problems to solve these inner feelings and that is the reason why they seek for other medias to help.

"aber nach ner weile hats mir net gelangt und hab mir dann copics geholt und noch so ein block, da die farben immer so extrem auslaufen auf normalen papier"
Vor allem weil ein normaler Block oder ein Skizzenbuch die Farbe regelrecht aufsaugt. Das wird mit der Zeit teuer. Einen Block extra für Marker sollte man sich unbedingt kaufen.
