MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Ministry Commissioner on Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law Konstantin Dolgov has made a sarcastic comment about reports on former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's appointment as the head of the Odessa regional administration in Ukraine.
"Saakashvili, who has been charged with numerous crimes against Georgian people, has been appointed governor of Odessa, where neo-Nazis burned people with impunity. Deep symbolism of Kyiv-style democracy, which the West is still observing with shameful amiability," Dolgov said on Twitter on Saturday.
Ukrainian Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Minister Ihor Shevchenko was first to announce Saakashvili's appointment as Odessa governor on Facebook on Friday evening.
Ukrainian presidential press secretary Svyatoslav Tseholko said President Petro Poroshenko would decide whether to appoint Saakashvili head of the Odessa regional administration after meeting him late on Friday.
Ukrainian journalist and parliamentarian Mustafa Nayem of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction said later on Twitter that Saakashvili had also been granted Ukrainian citizenship.
