The purpose is the same, but it's less convenient. Rapidshare and Filestube and a bunch of other sites that existed before and still continue to exist provide the same service. Megaupload was just previously so big because it was the most convenient.

Well, The Pirate Bay is my number one warez site. It cannot be taken down. They even set up a mirror in the darknet. Speaking of which. They toke down Silk Road and what happened?
Some other guy set up a new Silk Road.

I know. Just saying, there is actually a cost when something gets shut down. Those three new heads take a while to grow up to full strength.

Yeah, but someone's wallet will always be able to cover the costs. The point is that it is no use to fight against illegal things on the internet. It's a lost cause; just like the war on drugs.

I agree for the low-level things. I think that enforcement would be much more effective if they were focused on the stuff that really matters. For example, focus the internet war specifically on taking down child porn, automatic weapons, and explosives - or the war on drugs specifically on heroin, cocaine, and meth - and they might get somewhere. As it is now, though, it's like they're fighting a clusterfuck of hydras and don't know which head belongs to which one (in this extended simile, let's assume that if you cut off all of its heads at once it will die, and that they have the ability to cut off multiple heads at a time).

I think that drugs like meth are really bad, but it is of no use to fight them. There will always be people who pay for that and thus always those who make and sell meth.
And child porn exchange mostly happens offline.
Anyway, if crime wouldn't pay off people wouldn't commit crimes in the first place.
I know because I committed some crimes myself. Like shoplifting and that kind of stuff.

Yeah, there will always be people who commit crimes, but enforcement does matter. People give it different levels of consideration, but consciously or subconsciously the choice to commit a crime or not is a risk vs. reward assessment. A few people will have extremely skewed perceptions of the relative values of the risk and reward, but for the majority of the population, an increased likelihood of being caught leads to a decreased probability of committing the crime in question. If narcs ignored all of the weed, acid, mushroom, ecstasy, et al., then they could crack down on the heroin and meth business with a lot more force. If you increase the cost of doing business and the likelihood of getting shut down, then people will be less inclined to get into that business. That part's not even psychology, that's just economics.

You've got a point there. I never understood the prosecution of people who bought weed.
They never did any harm to anyone. I still smoke that from time to time and no one got ever hurt. Ever. This truly is a victimless crime and I envy Washington and Colorado.

The production is safe, too... it's just plants. I know someone who once had part of her apartment's wall blown up because the guy next door was trying to cook meth. She moved elsewhere once her lease expired.
