Blue jets, gigantic jets, cloud-to-cloud discharges and cloud-to-ground lightning are all electrical discharges from thunderclouds. An analysis of numerical simulations and observations of these phenomena places them all in a unifying framework. The image shows a cloud-enshrouded 'bolt-from-the-blue' lightning discharge in a storm near Langmuir Laboratory in central New Mexico, that produced an incipient upward jet above the top of the storm before turning downward to ground.http://www.google.de/imgres?q=storm+lightning+clouds&um=1&hl=de&rlz=1C1AFAB_enDE451DE457&biw=1280&bih=709&tbm=isch&tbnid=kOe_tab-qTshlM:&imgrefurl=http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/v1/n4/covers/index.html&docid=0LC3A5bRVDGkUM&imgurl=http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/v1/n4/covers/largecover.gif&w=440&h=578&ei=kxWUT6b-L4z14QTXydnQDw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=824&vpy=136&dur=535&hovh=257&hovw=196&tx=141&ty=177&sig=101764038097397923174&page=1&tbnh=170&tbnw=130&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0,i:70
