5,1 Beben in Griechenland.

Damaging earthquake in Pakistan – several houses destroyed

Last update: August 10, 2011 at 10:01 am by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell Leave a Comment

Earthquake overview : A M5.7 earthquake has hit Pakistan at 5:57 local time.Around 36000 people live within a50km radius of the epicenter, with many small villages with vulnerable structures.

UPDATE 09:55 UTC : The earthquake hit different areas of Balochistan and Sindh, creating panic among the people. Most of the people were asleep at the time the earthquake struck. They rushed in panic out of their houses. People seemed so terrified of the tremors that they were reluctant to return inside.

UPDATE 05:39 UTC : Several houses in a slum area in Khuzdar district which is located to the east of Balochistan, bordering Sindh province, were reportedly destroyed in the earthquake, but there is no casualty report yet. No news as yet about injuries. (source : Xinhua)
If some houses have been destroyed we think that the focal depth will finally be less than 54 km.

UPDATE 05:34 UTC : Tremors were also felt in the country’s southern port city of Karachi, said the report which is contradicted by a report of one of our Facebook readers who did not feel it.

UPDATE 05:29 UTC : The epicenter area is a flat desert landscape.

UPDATE 05:23 UTC : As this earthquake occurred in a remote rural area, we have (4 hours after the earthquake struck) still no reliable information on what exactly happened in the epicenter area.

UPDATE 05:14 UTC : 190,000 people are living within a radius of 100 km.

UPDATE 05:12 UTC : Pakistan Meteorological Department reports a magnitude of 5.7 at a depth of 54 km

UPDATE 05:09 UTC : GFZ and EMSC are maintaining their 5.7 magnitude and 10 km depth data while USGS has maintained also his magnitude but changed the depth of the hypocenter from the potentially dangerous 8 km to a far less dangerous 54 km. Only the damage in the epicenter area will be deciding who is right and wrong as we depend on the data from the seismological agencies.

Around 36000 people live within a 50km radius of the epicenter, with many small villages with vulnerable structures. It is expected that there will be some damage from this quake once relief workers check rural housing.

We will update you with more information as it comes to hand.

Earthquake China today (Xinjiang) : injured people + collapsed and damaged houses (intermediate report)

Earthquake overview : A new potentially damaging earthquake occurred in the Xinjiang Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture Artux, Kashi Jiashi County. The shallow depth of 8 km combined with the locally measured magnitude of5.8 makes this earthquake extremely dangerous for people living near the epicenter.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 11:37 UTC : As far as we can report at this moment (intermediate report) , these are the findings of the Chinese authorities :
- in a town of 3,000 people closest to the epicenter some people are injured.
- at least 200 houses have been damaged (30 units collapsed ).
- Some of the roads have also been damaged and there has been ground uplift.

UPDATE 11:14 UTC : The closest village to the epicenter (if correct) is Gelelukexiang at approx. 25 km. Artux City, approx.

UPDATE 11:07 UTC : We have to remind our readers that we have to be cautious with the Magnitude and depth of these earthquake (the main parameters to distinguish dangerous from harmless). Different agencies are reporting fundamentally different numbers.

UPDATE 11:06 UTC : 23 Historical CATDAT damaging earthquakes within 110 years within 100km radius.
* In 2003 in Bachu county, A Mw6.3 killed 268 and left 110000 homeless, around 50km away.
* In 1977 at about the same epicenter, 8 people were injured when a Ml 6.2 Struck.
* In 1971 at about the same epicentre, a Mw 5.8 at 41km depth, 1 death, 19 injuries with 500 houses destroyed.

UPDATE : Based on the consulted maps, we have the impression that the epicenter is located in a sparsely populated area. However this is relative as even villages in China are mostly very populated. The bigger cities liker Artux, Kizilsu and Payzawat are distant enough away from the epicenter to avoid damage.

UPDATE : As the Chinese authorities (CENC) have their own instruments close to the epicenter area and based on prior earthquakes , we have a lot of confidence in their own numbers.
