Niemand weiß, wer die Rebellen sind

"Wer sind diese Bewaffneten?", fragt Abu Elias. Er erzählt, dass er vor eineinhalb Jahren ebenfalls an den Demonstrationen gegen das Regime teilnahm. "Ich dachte, vielleicht würde sich endlich etwas verbessern. Wir wollen mehr Freiheit, günstigere Lebensmittel und bessere Stromversorgung." In Kusair habe es nie Probleme zwischen den einheimischen Christen und Muslimen gegeben. Seit über tausend Jahren leben in Syrien Christen und Muslime zusammen, worauf man immer besonders stolz war. Die konfessionelle Konfliktlinie verlief in dem Land verstärkt durch die Assad-Herrschaft eher zwischen Sunniten und Alawiten. "Dann kamen diese Männer, die wir noch nie zuvor gesehen hatten, und nannten uns Ungläubige", sagt Abu Elias.

Keiner der geflohenen Christen aus Kusair kann den Namen der Rebellengruppe nennen, die dort operiert. Für sie ist es einfach nur die "Freie Syrische Armee", wie sich der Dachverband der syrischen Rebellen nennt. Ob es sich dabei um eine radikale syrische Gruppe handelt, oder eine, die ausländische Extremisten in ihren Reihen zählt, ist unklar. Je länger der Krieg in Syrien andauert, desto größer ist die Sorge, dass solche Gruppen, wie sie in Kusair bereits herrschen, sich ausbreiten.

Aus Aleppo gibt es Berichte, dass auch dort Extremisten anfangen sollen, gezielt Christen ins Visier zu nehmen. Auch dort bewaffnen sich Christen, um die Rebellen fernzuhalten, die sie als Invasion einer ungebildeten Landbevölkerung ins Stadtzentrum wahrnehmen. Diese Sicht dürften sie mit vielen der sunnitischen Einwohner Aleppos teilen.

Trotz dieser Befürchtungen hält der Deserteur Dschamal fest zu den Rebellen. Natürlich habe er Angst, "dass wir am Ende von Islamisten regiert werden", sagt er. "Aber das Regime ist schlimmer. Wenn sie mich finden, bin ich tot."

Many areas around Damascus are reporting a sudden surge in shelling, airstrikes, and other forms of violence. Heavy shelling is reported in Irbeen (map). Douma has also reportedly been heavily shelled (map). This video reportedly shows Kisweh, to the southwest of the capital, after many shells reportedly landed on the suburb.

But there is one claim that has our attention - the LCC reports that there are clashes between Free Syrian Army units and the Syrian military between Qaboun and Tishreen. What's significant? Rebels made huge gains in Syria's north, AFP journalist says

Syria's rebels have captured hundreds of kilometers of territory in the country's north in the past six months, an AFP correspondent who visited the area in March reported on Monday.

The journalist, who was in the northwestern province of Idlib in March, verified that the rebel Free Syrian Army had gained significant ground in the period since.

It is now possible to travel hundreds of kilometers in areas controlled by the FSA, only making infrequent detours to avoid nearby garrisons still in the hands of the regular army.

The rebels refer to these as "liberated" areas.

Northwest and northeast Syria is predominantly Kurdish territory, where Kurdish militias took control after the regular army withdrew, with the two parties avoiding hostilities.

The FSA too has established a modus vivendi with the Kurdish forces, who display their neutrality by keeping out of the fight, with rare exceptions joining the fight against the government army.

0922 GMT: Syria. Al Arabiya is reporting a huge blast in Damascus at the Palestine Branch of Syrian intelligence, killing and injuring scores of people, including high-ranking officers.

The blast was claimed by both the Damascus Revolutionary Council and the "Prophet’s Grandchildren Brigades", which claimed, “Dozens of officers and shabbiha were killed in the blast," including a major general and two colonels.

The Brigades said one of its men planted the explosives inside the fuel tank of the branch.

“At exactly 9:35 a.m., seven improvised devices were set off in two explosions to target a school used for weekly planning meetings between shabbiha militia and security officers,” said Abu Moaz, a leader of the insurgent group Ansar al-Islam. “There were several officers present, and we are hoping they will be part of a large number of killed in this operation."

Gerüchte über Armeeputsch in Syrien

Den syrischen Rebellen ist offenbar ein Schlag ins Machtzentrum des syrischen Regimes gelungen. Bei zwei Explosionen werden streng bewachte Gebäude des Militärs beschädigt. Das Staatsfernsehen beharrt darauf, dass es keine toten Offiziere gibt. Allerdings machen auch Gerüchte über einen Putsch im Militär die Runde.

Nach zwei Explosionen im Zentrum der syrischen Hauptstadt Damaskus steht ein Militärkomplex in Flammen. Beide Detonationen hatten sich nahe dem Generalstabsgebäude der syrischen Streitkräfte ereignet, berichtete das Staatsfernsehen. Anschließend sei ein Feuer ausgebrochen, Rauchwolken waren über der Stadt zu sehen. In dem Bericht war - wie in Regierungsverlautbarungen üblich - von einem "terroristischen" Hintergrund die Rede.

Nach den Explosionen waren Schusswechsel zu hören, was zu Gerüchten über einen möglichen Putschversuch innerhalb des Militärs führte. Mehrere Hauptverkehrsstraßen wurden gesperrt. Die Detonationen waren noch in weit entfernten Vierteln zu hören.

“A group of Brigade heroes in collaboration with sympathetic secret Military Engineering soldiers carried out a complex targeted building martyrdom Operation as follows:

Our Brigade succeeded in penetrating the building fortifications for the third time in a row - and with the cooperation with some honorable soldiers from inside the building - were able to plant four explosive devices of a powerful explosive.

0655 GMT: Syria. While the world was watching the double bombing near Army Staff Headquarters on Damascus on Wednesday, Syrians were enduring the bloodiest day in the 18-month conflict. The Local Coordination Committees reported that, beyond the official death toll of six in the Damascus explosions, 343 people lost their lives at the hands of security forces across the country.

The Committees claimed that 162 were slain in Damascus and its suburbs, including 107 in a "massacre" in Thiabieh, 48 in Deir Ezzor Province, 37 in Hama Province, 34 in Homs Province, 29 in Aleppo Province, and 27 in Daraa Province.

Syria rebels say launch "decisive battle" in Aleppo

BEIRUT, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Syrian rebels said on Thursday they had launched their most coordinated attack in the country's biggest city Aleppo, promising a "decisive battle" to push out forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Insurgents from various brigades in Aleppo, embattled for two months, said "zero hour" had been announced by calls of Allahu Akbar ("God is greatest") from mosques.

"The zero hour has started on all fronts in Aleppo city. All rebels and brigades are taking part," said Abu Firas, spokesman for the Tawheed Brigade, the biggest rebel force in the city.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, taking part in meetings on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly in New York, called for the establishment of a safe zone in Syria despite the possibility that it could trigger a war, saying failure to take decisive measures now will lead to more risks in the future.

"If you don't take certain measures or certain steps on time, in the future you will be facing more risks. Unfortunately, since there was no clear message and decisive position of the international community at the early stages of the crisis, the Syrian regime felt confident enough to continue attacks,” said Davutoğlu.

Setting up a safe haven is one of the most debated issues among Turkish government officials. Turkish officials say the influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrians into Turkey would be the precondition for Turkey to establish a safe zone; similar to the buffer zone it established two decades ago to contain the mass migration of Kurdish Peshmerga from Iraq.

Speaking to the BBC on Thursday, Davutoğlu said that the establishment of a zone would also send a signal to the Syrian regime to stop its attacks against civilians. He added that risk was worth taking to get humanitarian aid to the huge numbers of displaced people inside Syria.

Late on Friday, Davutoğlu denied he called for the establishment of the safe zone in Syria despite the possibility that it could trigger a war.

Davutoğlu told state-run Anatolia news agency that he didn’t say going to war is a risk worth taking.
