It has to do with Alice in Wonderland. She follows the March Hare into a hole and ends up in Wonderland. So "going down the rabbit hole" is following someone (or their logic/train of thought) to a weird or crazy place.

Englische Sprichwörter kann man so eig nicht ins deutsche übersetzen. Man kann nur vergleichen wies gemeint sein soll.
