Well salaried means you get a fixed amount regardless of the exact number of hours you work... a lot of salaried workers end up working some amount of unpaid overtime as a result, but most of the good jobs are salaried so that's just something you have to deal with if you want a job that has superior pay and benefits. Only exception is union workers, but not many places are unionized.
My job right now is hourly and non-union, so if I go on vacation I just don't get paid for that period because I'm not working any hours.
