That one Congressman did say it was "a series of tubes," but at least he wasn't our president. Also, I'd rather have such technological ignorance than the cultural and societal ignorance it took to declare the internet 'Neuland.'
And yes, the internet is a parallel universe where the men are men, the women are men, and the children are FBI agents who are there to catch pedophiles. :trollking:

Don't get me even started on how clueless our politicians, authorities and surveillance-freaks really are, when it comes to information technology.
Merkel may have stated that it is "Neuland", but in the end that statement is harmless and at least funny. But some of them, especially the heads of the police think that the internet must and will abide to laws concerning copyright, terrorism™, child porn and the like.
It will not, because the internet abides to different rules. As I've said, it is its own universe and thus has its own rules.
I wonder if they will ever realize that.

Here's the full quote
"They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."
He was opposed to network neutrality, so he was trying to explain why ISPs should have the ability to charge fees for giving certain data higher priority than other data.

Well well well... Why am I not surprised? What a moron... I wonder why politicians always have to be some old coots with no clue about IT.

Because middle-aged and older people have always been the majority of politicians, and it'll be another 20-30 years before people who grew up with the internet account for the majority of that demographic.

I hope they don't will be as stuck up as the current ones. But I doubt that. They will be corrupted by money and power.
