Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed, born on March 2, 1942 in New York and died on October 27, 2013 in East Hampton, New York, was an American musician and songwriter. Together with John Cale, he was a founding member of the influential rock band The Velvet Underground. His following solo career spanned five decades.
Reed's work 1960s and 1970s earned him a reputation as a pioneer of genres such as punk, noise rock and industrial. His distinctive deadpan voice, poetic and transgressive lyrics, and experimental guitar playing were trademarks throughout his long career.

One of his most famous songs, Walk on the Wild Side, was a tribute to the outsiders and hustlers who surrounded Andy Warhol, promotor of Velvet Underground in the early phase, in the late 1960s and appeared in his films.
Each of the song's five verses describes a person who was a fixture at The Factory. (1) Holly Woodlawn, (2) Candy Darling, (3) "Little Joe" Dallesandro, (3) "Suga Plum Fairy" Joe Campbell and (5) Jackie Curtis.
