http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2523578/Mystery-surrounds-whereabouts-of-Michael-Jacksons-body.html (Archiv-Version vom 06.02.2011)Many believed the pop icon would be buried at an intimate service at Forest Lawn Ceremony, in the Hollywood Hills yesterday before his public send-off at the Staples Center, in downtown Los Angeles.
But instead, a spectacular gold coffin emerged after the hour-long private service, apparently bearing Jackson’s remains to his glittering farewell.
But the casket was not spotted leaving the centre - sparkintg fevered speculation about where Jacko's final burial site is.
Many believe Michael’s body has been whisked to a secret location.
Others think the body may have been buried by the Jackson family in secret BEFORE the memorial service, and are convinced that the casket – which took centre stage at the emotional send-off — was empty.
The casket, if it did contain Jackson’s body, was not seen returning to the Forest Lawn Cemetery, and last night it was revealed on a leaked copy of his death certificate that the mortuary is only a ‘temporary’ location for his body.
Sources now say the family could still press ahead with plans to finally lay the star to rest at his Neverland ranch, in Santa Barbara, California.
Plans to bury the star at his sprawling estate were initially scuppered by state laws which ban burials outside of graveyards without special permission.
However, his body could be cremated and his ashes spread there, or a mausoleum could be erected – turning it into a Graceland-style mecca for fans.
Last night, there was no word from the family about where they intend to bury Jackson.
Jackson’s family and 100 close friends had quietly said goodbye to him in the Hall of Liberty at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Then the coffin was carried to a waiting hearse to be driven to the city’s Staples Center for the star-studded public memorial watched by millions around the world.
The family’s touching private tribute came after they had assembled at the home of Jackson’s parents Joe and Katherine in Encino, in the San Fernando Valley.
Just before 4pm British time the parents, accompanied by Jacko’s sisters Janet and La Toya, emerged with other relatives and friends to climb into a massive fleet of cars.
The motorcade including five black Rolls-Royces, three Cadillac Escalades and ten identical Range Rovers headed from the property to the plush cemetery high up in the Hollywood Hills.
LA came to a standstill as cops halted rush-hour traffic on freeways so the cavalcade would not be held up. In scenes which were reminiscent of Princess Diana’s funeral cortege in 1997, police motorcyclists rode alongside the cars as they travelled unhindered on eerily empty roads.
Fans watching from overpasses waved and threw flowers to the vehicles as they drove underneath.
The cavalcade arrived at Forest Lawn — the last resting place of scores of actors, singers and other celebrities — at 4.15pm.
The stately procession was so large it took a full five minutes from the first vehicle passing through the gates to the last. The road leading to the cemetery had been closed for a half a mile in both directions as 200 police officers, plus private security teams, patrolled the event.
There were no fans outside the private service because police manning roadblocks had barred them from approaching the cemetery gates.
Jackson’s beloved grandma, Martha Bridges, lies buried in the cemetery below a shady tree.
Martha, who was his mum’s mother, died in 1990 aged 83. Also buried at Forest Lawn is his brother Tito’s ex-wife Dolores Martes, murdered 15 years ago.
The first family members to enter the Hall of Liberty were Katherine and Jacko’s children Prince, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Blanket all holding hands.
Jackson’s brothers Tito, Randy and Jermaine then walked in followed by friends who viewed the coffin and said their farewells.
Most wore black and many were openly crying as they hugged one another.

After 40 minutes the coffin was brought back out by the nine pallbearers dressed in black suits, red and gold ties and one white glove.

Once again, the motorcade was flanked by police cars and motorcycles as, with the hearse at its head, it drove along empty, closed-off freeways towards the Staples Center.
Around 20 helicopters hovered overhead on the route to the memorial concert.
Once in the venue it lay surrounded by flowers in front of his family and fans. Black carpets replaced the usual red ones for showbiz arrivals at the event.
And the front rows filled with nearest and dearest were set up in a church-like format.
A source said: ?Despite the performances and the celebration of Michael’s work and life, the family were keen to make the event seem more like a public funeral than a party. They thought Michael’s presence would help set the tone.
?They wanted the motorcade and the service to have a thoughtful and sombre feel, reminiscent of Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.?
In September of that year a four-mile route took Diana’s coffin from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey, where politicians and celebrities joined the Royal Family in a subdued congregation.
Jackson’s grieving family and friends also had attended a private viewing of the star’s body on Monday night on the eve of his spectacular televised send-off.
The private viewing was reportedly A Celebration of Life for the 50-year-old King of Pop.
