Turkmens accepted Kirkuk as a kurdish City

With the aim of promoting dialogue and debateabout the currents sensitive situation of Kirkuk and consolidating the peacefulcoexistence of different national groups there especially the Kurds and the Turkomans, weare pleased to have conducted the following interview with head of Iraqi Turkoman UnionParty Dr Sayfaddin Damirchi.
[Chawder] How do you see the situation in Kirkuk?
The situation in Kirkuk is tied to the general situation in Iraq. Given thedeterioration of security in the country, it is vital that all efforts in Kirkuk will bedirected towards establishing stability and security in the city. Here I call upon all mybrother Turkomans to avoid any act of terrorism because terrorism is not in theirinterest. As to the future of the city of Kirkuk, this city must remain as ever the cityof brotherhood and peaceful co-existence. We must solve our problems through civilisedlanguage and dialogue. It is in the interests of all ethnic groups in Kirkuk to haveKirkuk integrated within Kurdistan region.
[Chawder] But the Turkoman Fronthave a different vision about Kirkuk?
We, the Turkomans, have lived throughouthistory in this city with the Kurds and we share many aspects of social life. No one caneasily disrupt our ties. We have met brothers at the Turkoman Front several times. Wehave discussed this issue with them. They are also divided into two groups: one of themhave a similar thinking of ours. They believe in peaceful co-existence. But the secondgroup think differently.
They are under the influence of a neighbouring countryand they deal with the events as they are directed by that country. But we will continueour efforts with them and to raise awareness of all our brother Turkomans that we areliving in the age of understanding and dialogue and we must live with other nationsespecially our Kurdish brothers peacefully in this city.
[Chawder] You said agroup inside Turkoman Front have a positive attitude. Would they take a stand and changetheir political direction?
We have talked to them. We have explained to themwhere the interests of Turkoman people lie. But they are suspicious about the Kurdishpolicy in Kirkuk and about Arab policy in Kirkuk. That is why they have not made up theirminds yet. But those who work at the instigation of Turkey are different. They have theirown special interest in the issue which is money. Their number within Turkoman Front isbetween 300 to 1500.
[Chawder] Have you planned meetings and seminars forTurkomans in Kirkuk to raise their awareness?
Yes. Only recently we had ameeting with 500 Turkomans in Kirkuk. We explained to them that the interests ofTurkomans in Kirkuk lie in their peaceful co-existence with the Kurds. The proof of thisis the long history of suffering we had with Ba’athists in Kirkuk. We also askedthem not to listen or be influenced by some TV channels in their coverage of Kirkuk. Theyare distorting facts. The Turkomans only want to have a good future.
[Chawder]Do you want Kirkuk to remain a separate entity or be integrated withinKurdistan?
We want to live in Kurdistan. We do not want to live withterrorists.
[Chawder] As head of a political party, to what extent are youhappy with the city’s administration?
I think Kirkuk’sadministration is suffocated by Baghdad. Even if I were responsible for administration,what could I achieve without a budget? It is not part of Kurdistan either so that itsbudget would come from Kurdistan region’s government. But I am optimistic about thefuture of Kirkuk.
[Chawder] Terrorist acts in Kirkuk are increasing by day.What do you say about this?
I think to some extent it is the American’smistake that terrorism is increasing in the city. Whenever someone is arrested who isinvolved in terrorism they come and release him after a while. They also do not allowKurdistan’s police and security forces to have authority in protecting the city.Without this I think Kirkuk cannot see peace and security.
